You Never Leave or Forsake Me is a prayer for God’s comfort in abandonment. I hope this prayer-poem inspires you today.
Today’s post is the eleventh one in the #write28days challenge, in which I’m participating during the month of February 2022. Today’s prompt is “Leave,” and here is my prayer/poem.
You Never Leave or Forsake Me
Dearest Father
you never leave or forsake me
though half of my king-sized bed
has been empty for a month.
Though my heart has broken
for the ten thousandth time
in twenty-one years of suffering
you are still here with me.
You promised
never to leave or forsake me
the day my daddy left
when I was only four years old.
You kept your promise
to never leave or forsake me
in many seasons of depression
and abject loneliness.
You stayed by my side
when my husband abandoned me
in a flush of anger
seven years ago.
You held me close
when he drove away
for good
five weekends ago.
You stand beside me
on the lonely nights
when the prodigal is partying
and I’m crippled by grief.
You will never leave or forsake me
in the days ahead
as I slowly heal
from all the pain.
You will hold me close
as my tears fall
again and again
dripping with anguish.
Dearest Father
never leave or forsake me
as I take each tentative
step forward into the unknown.
I gained comfort from this song while I wrote this poem:
