Though I Can’t Hibernate is a prayer for rest and refreshment. I hope this prayer-poem inspires you today.
Today’s post is the twenty-seventh one in the #write28days challenge, in which I’m participating during the month of February 2021.Today’s prompt is “Hibernate,” and here is my prayer/poem.
Though I Can’t Hibernate
Father God,
though I can’t hibernate
like the animals do
in my woods
and pond
I can choose periods of rest
every day
and every week
to be refreshed
and replenished
by you.
In your wisdom
you ordained
hibernation
to protect animals
from the cold of winter.
They burrow deep
to stay warm
and their heartbeats slow
to conserve energy
until spring warmth
breaks through
their dens.
I praise you
for protecting all life
just as you guard
over mine.
In your wisdom
you set the pattern
of sabbath rest for me
even before sin
entered the world
to distract us
from this holy rest.
Though you needed no rest
you paused after creation
to show us as those
made in your image
the priority
of resting
relaxing
and enjoying
your company.
Though I can’t hibernate
and don’t even want to do so
for months upon end
I can pause each day
to revel in your grace
and once each week
to worship you
and reset my whole system
and schedule
toward shalom.
Remind me this spring
as the animals rise
from their dens
shaking free
from hibernation
that you invite me
into that deep
enclosed
warm
safe
sacred
space with you
each day
and every Sabbath.
I’m practicing a new way to rest this year, and I’ve detailed it on this post to encourage you.
