I met my goal of reading 100 books in 2022, most of them in the Christian genre. Here are my top ten picks from all the books I read.
10. Kingdom Men Rising
I’ve been using this compact, powerful devotional with my two teenage boys over breakfast. It has Tony Evans’ signature strong voice and powerful teachings in a short format which calls men to be kingdom builders. The thoughtful action questions pull no punches and get right to the heart of the daily teachings. Short prayers consistently invite men to engage their faith in service to others. The soft leather-feel cover and compact size make this an ideal gift for men of all ages, particularly young men like my own. It would also be an excellent resource for small group discussion.

9. Love’s Fortress
I enjoyed this unique story that switches between current day characters and historical characters. It shed light on a time in history I had never considered, and helped me have greater compassion from those who are different from me. An enjoyable fiction read that holds together well.

8. Garden Maker
In the winter I get bit by the gardening bug. This lovely book is whetting my appetite for spring and beyond in my garden. Filled with gorgeous photos, it’s part gardening manual, part Christian living book. Check out the garden-themed interview I had with her a few years ago HERE. Also listen to the podcast episode where I use a powerful metaphor from Christie’s book HERE.

7. Find Your People
Jennie Allen’s books are always high quality, and this one is no exception. She gives many practical tips about overcoming loneliness, which I truly appreciated in one of the loneliest years I’ve ever faced. I love her servant heart which always inspires me, and her no-nonsense approach hits me hard, just like I need it to do.

6. The Lady’s Mine
I will buy any book Francine Rivers writes, and this one did not disappoint. I loved escaping into the story this February. Much cleaner and easier to watch than 1883 or Yellowstone, since I am a highly sensitive person. I enjoyed the strong female lead in the story, along with the history, unfolding mystery and romance. It also helped me see new correlations to today’s world.

5. Prized
I won this book in a giveaway, and it came at the ideal time for me this spring, when my painful and messy divorce became final. This devotional was exactly the affirmation I needed when I felt so unloved and rejected. I plan to add it to my regular rotation of Lenten devotionals and turn to it when I need to remember how much God loves me.

4. The Path to Peace
What I enjoy most about this book is how each day’s devotion is broken into three engaging portions: a creative snippet of biblical fiction, the author’s personal stories, and practical application for the reader. This new format kept me engaged throughout the entire book and inspired my own writing ideas. I delighted in using this book for a morning devotional, and its convenient format is ideal for shorter attention spans or very busy readers.

3. Emmanuel
As with all of Ruth Chou Simons books, you get the double pleasure of great writing with the breathtaking beauty of her watercolor florals. It’s a beautiful Advent devotional I’ll treasure from year to year. I also liked the quotes she illustrated and the themes she wove into the weekly readings. A true treasure of artistry I’ll enjoy every December.

2. Strong in Battle
Susie Larson is one of the wisest women writers I know, and she has fought some major spiritual battles in her lifetime. In this year of intense spiritual warfare, I could not have appreciated her wisdom more. She gives great battle plans and leads you into deeper understanding of Bible passages. Her questions are probing and highly insightful. The Holy Spirit led me to read this book at the exact right time when I needed a reminder to press on in an intercessory prayer assignment, right when I wanted to give up. I will turn to this book again and again when I need strength in the fight, and also when I need guidance on what to do between spiritual battles.

1. What If It’s Wonderful?
This is my favorite book of 2022 because it helped me make a complete mindset shift. I discovered it through this devotion for Proverbs 31 Ministries, and I loved the devotion so much that I purchased the book. In this year full of fears, doubts, and struggles, this book kept me moving forward. It taught me brand new ideas about the importance of celebrating, and how nuanced this idea can be.
God used this book to literally make me stand up and hold my arms in a V for victory pose, though I have yet to see the victory. That’s how inspirational this book has been, and I have about 50 paper flags marking meaningful quotes. It’s a slow read because it’s so rich, but it’s worth the time investment because it’s so life-changing. If you’re short on hope and joy, make sure to get a copy of this beautiful book.
