Do you struggle to stay in the present? The past has held me hostage for most of my life, and I’ve been fearful of the future too. But this year I’ve learned why staying in the present is important. It can give you greater peace and strengthen your faith.
Stay in the Present to Fight Regret
Staying in the present helps us draw closer to God. We can walk on the path he wants most for us if we take one day at a time, rather than living in the past or worrying about the future.
If we get stuck in past regrets, we can’t embrace the blessings of the present. For many years, I struggled as a child of divorce. This caused many problems in my life, and I allowed this sad status to define me. The cursed feeling cast a shadow over the day in front of me, sapping the joy out.
God doesn’t want you stuck in the past. He wants you to embrace the current moment and count the many joys it holds. You can start staying in the present by cultivating thankfulness for the smallest blessings. God will open your eyes to many joys and help reset your focus off the past.

God also doesn’t want you to face the future with fear. For most of my life, I’ve struggled to embrace hope. The fear of abandonment affected many of my relationships. When I looked into the future, I saw loneliness and isolation. I was believing the enemy’s lies that no one would stay with me, since I had been abandoned as a child.
With God’s help, I have learned that staying in the present helps allay my future fears. Jesus told us not to worry, but to seek God every day for his abundant provision. When I focus only on the 24 hours in front of me, I find hope instead of fear. I’m growing more hopeful every day as God transforms my thinking.
