If your Christian faith feels dry, perhaps you are looking for spiritual refreshment. I know what it means to feel dry due to burnout and overwhelm. Maybe you’re feeling dry due to neglecting spiritual practices. Whatever the source of your dryness, you can feel refreshed in several simple ways.
Receiving Spiritual Refreshment
I love to garden. My plants need constant care and nourishment to be healthy, beautiful and fruitful. They need sunshine, water and tending. Leave one out, and they will quickly suffer.
When you fail to nourish your Christian faith, it can dry out quickly. My faith gets dry if my plate is too full with activities and projects. Within only a few days, it can suffer from neglect.
However, it’s not hard to get back into good spiritual habits. I’ve learned to pick one or two of these up, and I feel refreshed right away. Don’t beat yourself up with guilt; just do one of these things and you’ll feel refreshed!
Here are four simple ways you can receive spiritual refreshment right now:
- Take a prayer walk. My friend Dawn Klinge has written a wonderful post about what a prayer walk is and why it matters. I walk my dog every morning and pray out loud the whole time. You can read how God refreshed me on a recent walk in this Instagram post.
- Read God’s Word. Not a devotional, not a Christian book (and I’m telling you that as a Christian author!). Just you and the Bible. A great place to start is the Psalms. Read one of the psalms slowly, using it to inspire a prayer with God. You’ll feel refreshed when your spirit interacts with the Word of God.
- Sing a praise song. I love that Scripture records a time when Jesus sang with his disciples. If Jesus did this, we can too! Singing lifts your spirit. God doesn’t care if you can carry a tune. Sing a song of praise to him in the shower. You can sing one from Christian radio, or make one up of your own!
Today at Woman 2 Woman Ministries, I’m writing about how to gain spiritual refreshment through a special repentance exercise. That’s where I write about my fourth and most important tip. Learn which scripture inspired this exercise at my writers’ retreat in March 2019. Join me over at Woman 2 Woman Ministries to learn more.
