She Did What She Could is an unedited prayer-poem I wrote in just five minutes. I hope this prayer-poem inspires you today.
Today’s post is based on the prompt for Five Minute Friday. Today’s prompt is “She,” and here is my prayer/poem based on this scripture:
“The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
Mark 14:7-9 NIV
She Did What She Could
Her offering was not meager.
It was a loving sacrifice
of a valuable gift
given to her
that she knew
would be better
for him.
She had heard in his stories
he had been presented
with myrrh at birth
from foreign kings
who bowed before him
at only two years old.
She had meditated
on his story, envisioning
the opulent flask
that held the fragrance
which his mother turned
round and round
in her hands
before selling it
to pay for their way
back home
to Nazareth from Egypt.
His mother
had told her
God’s words had pierced
her soul since his birth
and she wondered
if his mother had sensed
a prophecy of his suffering
while holding that flask
of rich scented oil.
Tonight she broke
her own beautiful
flask of myrrh
and poured it
over his feet
not caring
what anyone thought
because he had done
so much to heal her.
He had anointed her
with his grace
pouring into every
crack and fissure
of her past
bringing new life
into once what was dead.
She hoped
beyond hope
that his predictions
of his impending suffering
weren’t true
but yet she decided
to believe them.
She did what she could
in advance
pouring myrrh over
his feet
soon to be pierced
anointing them
with her tears
and brushing them
with her hair
letting the scent cling
as a sweet memory
of his presence.
