What is a prophetic word of encouragement? I’ve learned about this spiritual concept in the past few years, and I’m reflecting on it today.

What Is a Prophetic Word of Encouragement?
A lot of people are reflecting on the lessons of 2020, now that we’re coming up on the anniversary of when the pandemic started. I’ve been thinking about something God spoke to me right at a year ago today.
I was preparing to go to a speaking event at one of the local churches, a women’s event on that Saturday. I was praying about it just like I do before every speaking event.
The Lord spoke to me. He spoke over me. He said, “I want you to enjoy this.” He had a sort-of stern tone in his voice.
Well, I didn’t understand that, really. I thought it was because I’m an Enneagram 1, because I really push myself hard. At the time I had a lot of deadlines I was trying to meet, and I thought, “Okay, the Lord is telling me to slow down and enjoy. I need that reminder to celebrate, pause, and just to enjoy life.” Which is definitely true – that’s something I struggle with a lot.
But now, reflecting back, I know that the Lord really wanted me to enjoy that Saturday afternoon with those women, because he knew that all of my speaking engagements would be shut down. He knew it would be a long, long time before I would be able to meet in-person and speak again.
So, that was a prophetic word of encouragement God spoke over me to encourage me, strengthen me and give me perspective and hope. One of the very best things that came out of 2020 for me was tuning in to those prophetic words of encouragement God spoke to me.

Now, I don’t know if you’re new to following me or if you’ve followed me for a long time. Something you need to know about me is that I’m extremely conservative in my viewpoints. I am highly committed to the inerrancy and infallibility of Scripture. I jokingly compare myself with an 80-year-old woman when it comes to my religious views.
So this is an area that God has opened up for me. It’s new, it’s exciting. It was really scary at first when he introduced this concept to me around 2018, because it was so new. But I have learned so much from it. I’ve been so blessed by it.
One of the ways I learned the most was from my friend Debbie Kitterman’s book, The Gift of Prophetic Encouragement. God sent this to me at the exact right time, when he was trying to give me a message that was hard for me to interpret. I didn’t know what to do because it was so new.
Basically, Debbie makes a very biblical, solid point in this book: When God gives us a prophetic word of encouragement, it’s for our good but also for the good of other people. She tells lots of wonderful stories in this book about how God gives her a word that she’s supposed to share with someone to bless them and encourage them in their faith.

I haven’t talked a lot about this because I know this is kind of the deep end of faith. But I feel like it’s an area where a lot of us can grow. We can grow by studying the Bible, and that’s where it all starts.
I feel like God rewarded me – I want to put the emphasis on that word – it’s a reward for the years of Bible study that I did. The years of meeting him in his Word, seeking him, seeking his will, seeking his ways and his character.
That was a fruit that he brought out of all those years of getting into his Word and seeking him. Being deliberate about believing the truth of his Word. Applying it, digging into it. I feel like prophetic words of encouragement were what God harvested for me as a reward. A blessing for learning his voice. For making sure I was following him first and not myself.
That was a reward he gave me to recognize those prophetic words of encouragement he was speaking over me, over my life and my walk of faith. But also giving me words of encouragement to share over other people that I couldn’t possibly know what’s going on in their situation, if it wasn’t for the revelation of the Holy Spirit.
This is the deep end of faith. But it's an area where a lot of us can grow. #propheticencouragement Click To TweetLearning About Prophetic Words of Encouragement
I’m just so thankful for Debbie’s book, because it gives a ton of biblical examples. It’s very grounded in God’s Word, just from an angle I had never considered before out of my extremely conservative background. God has not only expanded my territory with this book, but exploded it. I hope you’ll consider purchasing your own copy.
I love this book. It changed my life, all for the better. Maybe God will use it to expand your territory in 2021 as well.
