A Prayer to Celebrate Autumn

Happy first day of autumn! I’ve written a prayer to celebrate autumn. Today, I want to lead you on a virtual prayer walk through my Missouri woods, complete with photos of the wildflowers, plants and trees.

I’ve been spending the past few weeks working from my porch in the woods. It’s lovely being surrounded by nature all day long. Though many of you can’t enjoy that option, I hope you enjoy this virtual tour. May this prayer encourage you to pause, celebrate God’s goodness, and inspire you to go on your own prayer walk in nature this fall.

Listen along here:

A patch of ferns I haven’t seen before,
in 16 years of living here!

Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 NLT

We praise you, Lord, for sustaining life in every season. You make everything beautiful for its own time. You always give us reasons to praise you! Help us look for reasons to praise you each day this autumn.

The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours;
everything in the world is yours—you created it all.
Psalm 89:11 NLT

Lord, we praise you for the diverse beauty of your creation. We marvel at the works of your hands. Only you can speak such loveliness into being. All of creation belongs to you, and you are fully trustworthy to sustain it. Thank you for sustaining us, Father.

Goldenrod

So also, golden splendor comes from the mountain of God. He is clothed in dazzling splendor.
Job 37:22 NLT

Father, we praise you for the colors of gold you display before us in autumn. May the brilliance we see point our hearts toward you. May our hearts never be satisfied with the things of the world, but only find true satisfaction and perfect peace in you.

Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?
Matthew 6:26 NLT

Father God, we thank you for upholding creation so faithfully. The butterflies, birds, squirrels, raccoons and other creatures are feasting on autumn’s provisions. When we see the nuts, berries and fruits of autumn, may we remember that you provide for all our needs in abundance. May we ask for requests in Jesus’ name, trusting that you will provide for us according to your will.

The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.
Isaiah 58:11 NLT

Lord, we praise you for the autumn wildflowers that bloom beautifully even in dry conditions. Their roots go deep to gain nourishment from underground streams. May we also trust fully in you, gaining nourishment each day from your Word to guide and strengthen us.

I spy a few more red leaves every day!

They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.
Jeremiah 17:8 NLT

Lord, we love the sights and scents of changing leaves. They are the bright symbols of this season. Yet your Word tells us that if we believe in you, our faith can have green leaves and fruit in every season of life. Help us develop well-watered faith with deep roots in the truth of your Word.

The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever.
Isaiah 40:8 NLT

Father, the flowers in our gardens are pushing out their last blooms before frost. The grasses are frantically scattering seed for next year. These plants “know” how brief their seasons last. Give us a similar knowledge of the brevity of life. Help us to treasure every day of this autumn as a special gift from you. May we use our autumn days to advance your kingdom.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Friend, I know 2020 has been a difficult year. But it’s a new season, starting today. Will you choose to praise God every day this fall? You will be uplifted as you do this. I hope you’ll get out in nature and praise God for all the goodness you see this autumn.
