My Perception Can Be Distorted is a prayer for truth and clarity. I hope this prayer-poem inspires you today.
Today’s post is the twenty-third one in the #write28days challenge, in which I’m participating during the month of February 2021. Today’s prompt is “Perception,” and here is my prayer/poem.
My Perception Can Be Distorted
My perception of you, Lord
can be distorted
when I see things
only from a human
point of view.
My limited
stunted
broken view
looks down
not up.
Ever earthbound
ever pointed
toward negativity.
Often doubting
your goodness
and sovereignty.
Give me your heavenly
perspective
to lift my thoughts
lighten my heart
and infuse me
with your perfect peace.
My perception of myself
can be distorted
by the simplest choices:
one extra brownie means I’m fat
one misspoken word means I’m foolish
one misstep means I’m a failure.
Yet you call me
fearfully
and wonderfully
made,
shaped by your own hands
and given the breath of life
with your own mouth.
Help me love myself
the way you love me:
boundless and lavish
a living temple
for your glory.
My perception of others
can be distorted
by my presuppositions
prejudices
and past hurts.
I see them bent and refracted
as in carnival mirrors:
monstrously tall and condemning
or miniature and crushable.
Help me see
your image
reflected in each person
so they are no longer
too tall or small
but on the same plane
as me, more alike
than different.
May I learn to love and forgive them
continually
the way you love and forgive me.
My perception of life
can be distorted
by my old sinful nature
like peering through a cloudy glass
seeing only dimly for now.
Yet one day you will make it all clear.
No more distortion
no more misperception
but all things new
and set right in the light
and perfect truth
of your very presence.
