More Than a Raft

More Than a Raft is a prayer of faith and trust. I hope this prayer-poem inspires you today.

Today’s post is the third one in the #write28days challenge, in which I’m participating during the month of February 2022. Today’s prompt is “Raft,” and here is my prayer/poem.

More Than a Raft

When I am tempted

to turn back toward the bondage

of past dysfunction,

remind me

O Lord God Almighty

what you did for the Israelites

standing on the bank

of the Red Sea.

You did not

create a fleet of rafts

from thin air

to carry them to the other side

before the Egyptian army

approached.

No.

To display your great glory

and ensure that no one else

could take credit

for your spectacular rescue

you sent a strong east wind

to blow the walls of the sea

apart

and dry the mud

into a clear path forward

for your people.

I can only imagine

their fear

as they walked between

watery walls

wondering if those very walls

would crash down on them.

I wonder

if their perverse longing

for the familiarity

of abuse cycles

stirred wild in them

like the fish swimming

in confusion

on both sides.

I ponder

how their faith

must have grown

with every step forward

seeing Moses’ arms spread out wide

as a symbol of your powerful hand

moving right before their eyes.

You did not allow

a single drop to fall on them

nor a single patch of mud

to hold them stuck.

You led them across

and once they were safe

you destroyed their enemies

with a mighty crash.

Today on my own bank

still tied to the land

that the locusts devoured

you give me far more than a raft:

you create a miracle path

forward

and promise

to demolish my enemies

if I will simply walk with faith

letting go of what is behind

and trusting you

to display your great glory

as the sun rises in the east.
