This Too Shall Pass
As I’m writing this, we’re experiencing a deep freeze. Snow in huge drifts, and wind chills in the below-zero range.
We’ve had a relatively mild winter up until mid-February. Then we got slammed with two weeks of seriously cold weather. But only 10 days from now, the highs will be in the 40s. That’s when the major melting will occur, and mud (with possible flooding) will be our new concern.
These temperature swings are normal in the Midwest.
As a fifth-generation resident of this area, you’d think I’d be more prepared. But the swings still come as a shock to me, and in the middle of them, I wonder if they’ll ever end. Wrapped in four layers of clothing, armed with my space heater and blankets, the upcoming Thursday in the 40s looks impossibly far away. But by the time this post publishes, it will be in the past, and spring temps may very well be here.
What a 12-month ride we’ve had. A rollercoaster of ups and downs that make any Midwestern winter look boring by comparison. One of the worst parts of this wild ride has been not knowing how or when it will end. We still don’t know when (or if) life will return to “normal.” What we once knew. What we likely took for granted.
For the past 12 months, I’ve taken deep comfort in God’s unchanging character. In knowing he’s in control of everything, including the seasons. That as long as the earth exists, spring will always follow winter because he deems it so. That’s where my hope is resting today.
Spring is coming, though it’s totally buried under 18-inch snow drifts today.
Buds are forming in the barren branches. Life is pulsing, though at a slower heartbeat, deep under the soil’s surface. Daffodils will bloom. Grass will grow to the point of needing to be mowed again. It’s impossible to see this today as I glance at the snow, but I know it’s true.
It’s true because God is true. He is sure and certain, a strong tower in all the changing seasons of life. And this too shall pass.
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens. Ecclesiastes 3:1 NIV
Each season has its set times and limits, according to God’s plan. The pandemic has limits. Winter has its limits. Whatever hard season you are facing has limits too.
As I rise from my blanketed lap at the computer desk to pile on more blankets in my bed, I’m remembering this is just a brief season that will pass in God’s timing.
And today, even as I look out onto the snowy drifts, I’m looking forward to that future season of daffodils and green grass, when this winter season has passed. I pray you can look forward with hope too.

The Message of the Cross
Have you ever been called a fool for sharing your faith? At times, I have played the fool for faith.
I used to feel frustrated when those who criticized me for my faith didn’t understand my perspective. I wasn’t making fun of them for what they believed…didn’t they owe me the same measure of respect?

How to Glorify God in Motherhood
Sometimes in the daily grind of mothering, it’s difficult to see how the mundane tasks can glorify God.
If you’re a mom, I’m sure you’ve felt exasperated at times by the seemingly endless stream of diapers. The truth is, we moms can bring glory to God even in the task of diapering, because it has to be done to care for our children. Whatever we do can be for God’s glory…
