Longing to See You

Longing to See You is a prayer of longing for God’s presence. I hope this prayer-poem inspires you today.

Today’s post is the first one in the #write28days challenge, in which I’m participating during the month of February 2022. Today’s prompt is “Longing,” and here is my prayer/poem.

Longing to See You

Show me your glory

Moses once cried out

to you. And you were

gracious

to cover him with your hand

while you passed by

so he would not perish

from the ecstasy

of seeing your glory

with human eyes

made only of dust

and water.

My own eyes

heart

and soul

are longing to see you too

thousands of years

after Moses caught a glimpse

that made his face glow for weeks.

I am longing to see you in the night

when I feel you so near to me

when all the world is quiet

except for the solitary call

of the great barred owl

and you speak hope right

to my anxious heart.

You calm my fears

with your loving embrace

though I have never laid eyes

on your strong arms.

I am longing to see you in the morning

when last night’s grief

has not yet turned into joy.

I strain to see the sun

rising again

through grey clouds of winter

and bare black fingers

of lonely tree branches.

I am longing to see you, O Lord

in the afternoons

when all my longings keen sharp inside

hearkening from my oldest

fear of abandonment

and I don’t want to face

the coming night alone

again.

I am longing to see you

and will keep longing

to see you

until I come face to face

with you

someday.

Until then

I am satisfied

with the bread of heaven

in your Word

the traces of your Spirit

in creation

and the glimpses of Jesus

in the body of Christ

known as the church.
