Last year, Tessa Afshar’s book, Pearl in the Sand, made my top books of 2020 out of over 100 reads. I’m excited to dive into this new novel as one of my summer escapes. It just arrived in the mail last week, and I’m looking forward to reading it!

Hope When You’re Hurting

This contemporary Christian classic is 25 years old, but it’s new to me this year. I ordered it as an enhancement to my role as a Stephen Minister, and yet it is ministering to my needs in deep ways. A wonderful, deeply thoughtful book.

Hope in the Dark

I appreciated Craig Groeschel’s simple but profound truths in my favorite book of 2020, Dangerous Prayers. That’s why I was eager to read this book on hope, an area of my spiritual life that needs growth. It’s an affirming resource for anyone going through a very dark trial.

Untouchable

While I normally attend conferences only with Christian women, this summer I’m attending a co-ed conference. I consider this book essential reading before I interact with other men. This book deftly exposes blind spots you may have as a Christian leader, and humbly points out ways you can recognize and handle them so you don’t fall into temptation.

Growing Slow

I’m loving slow sips of this book while I eat breakfast in the morning. It’s encouraging me as a hard-driving, production-focused Enneagram 1 to slow down and consider what God really wants from me in this season. Emotionally Healthy Discipleship

The podcast I return to most often is Pete Scazzero’s Emotionally Healthy Leadership podcast. I’ve learned so many valuable, life-changing truths from this podcast and his original book, Emotionally Healthy Spirituality. This book is a deep, thought-provoking look at discipleship in the 21st century church, and how we can all benefit from this plan. This is another popular book that’s new to me. It is for deep soul work, and I’m taking it slow. The built-in workbook helps you process the ten lies that prevent you from becoming emotionally healthy, and helps you choose the ten decisions that can change everything for you. It’s an excellent companion if you are receiving Christian counseling, or a good check-up if you have already seen a counselor (like I did for 5+ years).
