Today I’m fixing my thoughts on God rather than on what has weighed on me this week. I hope this prayer/poem encourages you to fix your thoughts on God too.
This piece is based on the Five Minute Friday prompt for the week: Fix. I love this verse in Philippians which tells us to fix our thoughts on what is pleasing to God. It’s unedited, and I wrote it in five minutes flat.
Fixing My Thoughts on God
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
Philippians 4:8 NLT
Father God,
I’m choosing to fix my thoughts
on you today
instead of the troubling world
around me.
Fixing my thoughts on you
like a pushpin holding a new drawing
to a board, displaying beauty
over plainness.
My thoughts, so often down in grey
and channeled over the same
rivulets of memory,
need to be rerouted toward
the green hope you hide
inside my every day.
Lift my focus toward the heavens, Lord.
May the thoughts of my mind
and the meditations of my heart
point toward what is true
and timeless:
the heron taking flight from the pond
trees hiding buds on their winter branches
chickadees twittering while eating sunflower seeds
a single dandelion opening its yellow face
even in January.
Thoughts of what is right and lovely
rather than discouraging and wrong.
Help me, Father, reroute my thoughts
and pin them to you,
holding them steadfast
on your promises of grace.

On Five Minute Fridays, I also like to showcase my Art Sunday pieces on this weekly post. Here’s my drawing titled Spring Offering from 1.17.2021. Art Sunday is what I do with my 12-year-old daughter to enjoy Sabbath rest in creative ways.
