Adjusting Your Attitude
On those grey-cloud days of February, when winter seems endless, I am tempted to put on a grumpy attitude; one that is as soggy as the mud in my front yard.
It doesn’t help that I’m naturally a glass-half-empty kind of gal. I have to fight for a better attitude. It doesn’t come easy, but it is worth it.
In fact, I used to be a grumpier person. One who focused on the negative and didn’t stop the flow when it passed from my thoughts to my lips. Through many mistakes, I learned the hard way that people won’t tolerate a negative attitude for very long.
Negative attitudes are isolating. They push us away from others. Then, we feel more negative, and the cycle of a bad attitude continues.
I discovered the key to stopping this negative cycle — meditating on the truths of God’s Word.
I can’t magically add more sunshine to my grey days, and neither can you.
But we can fix our thoughts on higher things, which we learn about in Philippians 4:8 NIV. Things that please God and lift our thoughts out of the grump dump.
Let’s break this famous passage down to see how it can help us choose a different attitude.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true
Often, when we have a bad attitude, we’re believing lies about ourselves, our situations and others. We can ask God to show us the truth and make necessary shifts in belief. Satan wants us to fall for lies, but God wants us to believe the truth and shape our attitudes around it.
whatever is noble
When I think about the word noble, I think about someone with refined character. Someone who is gracious, well-mannered and self-controlled under pressure. Maybe you know someone like this. Think of them when you are tempted to have a bad attitude, and follow their example.
whatever is right
Not right in our own eyes, but right in the ways of God. Ask God, “Is my attitude aligning with what is right?” He will show you if you need to make adjustments in your perspective, just like he showed Jonah in Jonah 4:1-11.
whatever is pure
Have you allowed something impure to infect your thought life? Something you watch on television, someone you follow on social media, some person who isn’t a good influence, or something you know you shouldn’t be viewing? Confess this to the Lord, ask him for help, and lay it aside. You’ll be amazed at how its removal from your life helps you choose a better attitude.
whatever is lovely
Creation is filled with lovely things, every season of the year. Take note of nature when you are feeling grumpy. Watch the birds, study the trees, look at the sunrise or sunset. Note how beautifully God cares for his creation, and how much more he cares for you. Take delight in this knowledge and choose joy!
whatever is admirable
Who do you admire? Is it someone with godly character? Someone who overcomes when the trials of life inevitably arrive? When you are tempted to have a bad attitude, study this person (or a person you admire in the Bible). Mimic their characteristics, and your attitude will improve.
if anything is excellent or praiseworthy
What is excellent or praiseworthy in your life? When you count even the smallest blessings, your spirits will lift. Keep a daily gratitude list of five things for which you are thankful. Praise God for them and call them excellent. As you practice this day by day, you’ll feel more positive.
think about such things.
Did you know that around 90 percent of our thoughts are negative, and we recycle those thoughts each day? You can reverse this trend by meditating on Philippians 4:8 every time you are tempted to feel grumpy. Write this verse down, post it in a visible area, and think it through several times every day.
Adjusting your attitude is hard if you try to do it on your own, because life gives us plenty of reasons to be grumpy. But if you invite God to help you adjust your attitude, he’ll be happy to answer that prayer. He’ll give you the joy and peace you’re seeking as you obey him, and he’ll give you reasons to smile even on the greyest of days.
