Are you facing a giant challenge in your life? We can face the giants in our lives with rock-solid faith. When we look at the account of David and Goliath, we can learn important spiritual truths to help us stand firm.
Recently I reread the account of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17 in my One Year Bible. I enjoyed revisiting this powerful story of faith, which may be familiar to you too.
Facing Giants with Faith
David had several strikes against him as he went to face the Philistine giant. Maybe you are facing similar hardships to David. Yet God wants to do a mighty work in you, just as He did through David.
Learn about rock-solid faith from these five struggles David faced BEFORE he fought the giant:
1. He wasn’t cut out to be a solider.
David was just a teenager when this event happened. He lacked the typical experience for a tough job. Do you feel too “something” for the trial you are facing? Too old, busy, weary, or afraid? God can fill in your gaps with His mighty power.
2. He lacked family support.
In verse 28, his oldest brother shows scorn to David, the youngest one who wasn’t like his brothers. Does your family leave you hanging when you need them the most? David pushed forward despite a lack of family backing, because he trusted in God’s plan.
3. He faced criticism from his elders.
King Saul doubted David in verse 33, calling his idea “ridiculous.” Have you also been criticized by someone you respected? Even though it must have hurt, David didn’t let the criticism deter his purpose.
4. He was virtually unarmed in the impending attack.
Saul offered his armor, but David felt uncomfortable in it (verses 38 and 39). He faced the battle in his regular setup–shepherd’s clothes, a sling, and five smooth stones (verse 40). Do you feel confident facing your trials just as you are, because God’s got your back?
5. He faced taunts from his enemy.
Goliath spared no insulting words for David in front of both armies. Have you been torn down, in private or public, by someone who opposes you? Has it squashed your confidence or solidified it? If you stand strong on what God thinks about you and the victory he has prepared for you, you can let these words fall away.

In the end, David triumphs over Goliath because God empowers him to do so. With a single stone directed by God’s power, the huge giant toppled over, and the Israelites enjoyed a victory. The best part of the story? David gave God all the glory!
He said, “Everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!” 1 Samuel 17:47 NLT
Do you believe that your battle is the Lord’s battle? That He will rescue you because He is Lord of Heaven’s Armies? That you can face giants with faith, no matter the size of your challenge?
Friend, God is waiting to win your battles for you. I’m facing several battles right now. These situations are frustrating and discouraging, yet I believe that God already has the victory sealed for me. The answers may not look how I expect, but I’m trusting in God to provide creative solutions. He has the victory sealed for you too, though you may not be able to see the outcome right now.
Even if your circumstances don’t change, your faith can be as strong as David’s. Your relationship with God can become closer through your challenges. You can face your giants with faith because God is on your side!
