Ease the Pain is a prayer for God’s comfort in a time of grief. I hope this prayer-poem inspires you today.
Today’s post is the sixth one in the #write28days challenge, in which I’m participating during the month of February 2022. Today’s prompt is “Ease,” and here is my prayer/poem.
Ease the Pain
O Lord
ease the pain
that crushes my heart today
as I mourn my losses.
The pain of an empty
bottomless
hole
reaching so far back in time
I feel like I’m spiraling
downward
on a million step staircase
of heartache.
Pain triggered
by a thousand memories
linked together in spiderwebs
when a single song verse
decades-old photograph
Facebook reminder
certain angle light shaft
store shelf candy
specific spice scent
even a falling leaf
plucks at one strand
then all the webs
nearly break
with the weight.
Ease the pain, Jesus
the kind that threatens
to split my heart in two
presses like a lead vest
on my chest
burns the corners
of my tear-soaked eyes
tempting every nerve ending
to seek instant relief
from the exact wrong things.
Carry me through
this grief tunnel
which is both
hard and good
as I learn to embrace
inherent pain
in this necessary journey
toward acceptance.
But I ask you
O Comforter of my Soul
to ease the pain
just a bit
as I take each step forward
holding your nail-pierced hand
in mine.
