When you are disappointed in a relationship, where do you turn? I have learned to turn to God first when I feel disappointed in relationships.
Today’s post is the first one in the #write28days challenge, in which I’m participating during the month of February 2021. The prompt for today is “Disappointed,” and here is my prayer/poem.
When You Are Disappointed in a Relationship
Father God,
Today I confess
I have been disappointed
by people I’ve loved,
those to whom I extended my needs.
My heart aches
because others have let me down.
Not just in what they have done
but what they have left undone.
In ways they did not intend
and in more painful ways they intended.
Too long, I have stood in the shadows of my hurt
pretending I preferred the darkness.
Years wasted in self-pity
self-focus
self-medication.
Today I am stepping into the light
of your grace, choosing to wrap myself
in your embrace
your heart more tender
than any human heart
your faithfulness
more consistent than the rising sun.
In this light of grace
I take your hand, and you gently point
me toward the truth, the many ways
I’ve disappointed you.
But instead of handing me shame
you open your hand and show me
the nail piercing, reminding me
of the price you paid
so I could receive your grace
and extend it to others.
Today I lay my disappointments
at the foot of the cross
and we walk away together
hand in hand
on a bright path
of letting go
while I walk beside you, Lord.
