When we need hope, we can use Christian meditation to find a new focus. Our hope can be found in God alone, and his Word provides all the hope we need. When we look for hope in God’s Word, we can defeat doubt and discouragement.
Hope in God’s Word
Hope does not come naturally to me. I’ve struggled to find hope in hard times in the past. As a long-time victim of emotional abuse, hope seems particularly elusive to me. Yet God is calling me to focus on hope as I move forward on a healing path.
If I stick with my old mindset, I will choose doubt and discouragement instead of hope. My natural mindset, bogged down by painful memories, doesn’t see a sunshiny future. With God’s help, I can find the sunbeams shining between the clouds. His perspective is lighting up the vistas that lie ahead.
I am gaining more hope by meditating on hope-filled scriptures. Every time I have a discouraging or doubtful thought, I try to immediately replace it with a scripture that provides hope. This practice helps transform my thought life through Christian meditation (which is the topic of my upcoming book, to be released in October 2019).
These Psalms from the NLT version have helped me choose hope in the past several years:
- But the needy will not be ignored forever; the hopes of the poor will not always be crushed. Psalm 9:18
- Lord, you know the hopes of the helpless. Surely you will hear their cries and comfort them. Psalm 10:17
- May integrity and honesty protect me, for I put my hope in you. Psalm 25:21
- So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord! Psalm 31:24
- We put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. Psalm 33:20
- Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God! Psalm 42:11
- Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him. Psalm 62:5
- So each generation should set its hope anew on God, not forgetting his glorious miracles and obeying his commands. Psalm 78:7
- When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer. Psalm 94:19
- Do not snatch your word of truth from me, for your regulations are my only hope. Psalm 119:43
- I am worn out waiting for your rescue, but I have put my hope in your word. Psalm 119:81
- You are my refuge and my shield; your word is my source of hope. Psalm 119:114
- The Lord will work out his plans for my life. Psalm 138:8 (this is my focus verse for 2019)
