Best Christian Books of 2024

The Night is Normal

This  is an ideal book for someone going through a spiritual depression, dark night of the soul, or deep disillusionment with the church. It ministered right to my most personal, inner needs. I highlighted dozens of powerful quotes and teachings. I will be recommending this book to many others for years to come.

As Long As You Need

J. S. Park, a hospital chaplain, does not shy away from the hardest questions Christians face in their grief. He even talks about his own breaks with reality and his humble, painful questions of himself and God in his mental and spiritual struggles.
I’m not going to lie – it is full of triggers that folded me in half while I read them. Yet those of us in the depths of grief are desperate for true words of comfort from legitimate sources on the raw edges, not anything plastic or pithy. That’s why this book is so refreshing in its dark beauty.

Probably the most important takeaway is that you don’t get on with grief – you walk WITH grief. I’m learning to do this and it’s making an enormous difference in my mental health.

Waking Up to the Goodness of God

This was my favorite devotional of 2024. It is filled with hopeful moments, beautiful stories, lovely metaphors, and hard-won encouragement. It’s a perfect read for springtime too.

The Christian’s Guide to No-Contact

This is an extremely helpful book if you need to set a no-contact boundary, or if you have already set one. I have several in place, and this book helps me stand my ground. The teaching is solidly based on scripture. I am thankful the author speaks the truth in love as she advocates for abuse victims like myself.

Saved by the Matchmaker

The second book in this series was wonderful. I loved the redemption stories for both characters who were struggling to trust again. One of them seems like a healthy enneagram 8. It was a good glimpse for me because I have been hurt by the unhealthy 8 type. Book 1 is excellent too, and I enjoyed the recognizable details of a city I love when it was in its early development stages.

Why I Believe

This new book is different from all others Dr. Cloud has written. He has written this one for his non-believing friends because he wants them to understand why he believes what he believes.
He talks about supernatural occurrences that cannot be explained but are undeniably true.
God has also used Dr. Cloud to help others in miraculous ways, and he even used him to stand up to a satanic worshiper way back in college.
Now I know I’m even less alone because Dr. Cloud recounts those types of stories in his book. The storytelling style is so engaging.
As a fellow author, I’m very impressed that Dr. Cloud decided to go this deep and spiritual with his memoir written to non-believers and pre-believers. I think he’s letting the stories speak for themselves because they are less about him and more about how God can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, and however he wants. This is powerful stuff that’s well worth sharing with the non-believers in your life who may be curious about faith.

The Garden Within

The Garden Within is one of the best books I read all year. What I love about it:
– Insight into how God designed our neurons to reflect his glory
– Fresh looks into the Garden of Eden and the parable of the soils for personal application
– Rich gardening metaphors that affirm my emotions and give me hope for deep healing
This is a book to be savored slowly. It holds the potential to change your life if you grasp the wonderful truths it unfolds.

So Into You

This was a delightful romance. It did a great job describing someone with an anxiety disorder. It is also a good redemption story for recovering addicts. I liked how the story had several different storylines that tied together. It wasn’t just a romance story for young adults; it had a love story for middle-aged adults too. I enjoyed how the story pulled me forward all the way through to the end. It was a good escape that I needed, and it entertained me while encouraging me.

A Bit of Earth

Since I love gardening, I enjoyed the metaphors and pictures throughout. I enjoyed the poetry and prayers sprinkled into the manuscript, as well as the interesting quotes. It’s a great read for a beginning or experienced gardener who is passionate about faith.
