4 Tips for Sharing Your Testimony

Does the idea of sharing your testimony with others sound intimidating? I admit that it felt that way for me for a long time. As much as I love God and want to share Jesus with others, I have often gotten shy when the moment presents itself.

I learned an important tip about sharing your testimony from my former pastor that reduced the fear factor. He said that if you tell YOUR story, what God is doing in your own life, no one can argue with you. Your feelings and experiences are your own, and no one can debate them.

4 Tips for Sharing Your Testimony

Has God redeemed you from a tough situation? If so, that’s a story you can share with others! The times God has helped you overcome challenges are ideal stories to share with anyone God puts in your path.

With the holiday season soon approaching, you may have greater opportunities to share than normal. Now is a good time to practice sharing what God has done for you. Here are four simple tips to help you get prepared.

1. Pray for opportunities to share your testimony.

Every day, ask God to give you chances to share what he has done for you. Ask the Holy Spirit to prompt you when you are near someone who needs to be encouraged. It will be easier to recognize these God-given opportunities if you have first covered them in prayer.

2. Practice makes perfect.

Write out your testimony. It can be a basic timeline of what God has done in your life. It doesn’t have to be your entire life story. Your mini-testimony can be a snippet of how he helped you in a certain situation, such as a health crisis, difficult work assignment, or life transition. Writing it out will help you fix the details in your mind. Then practice it out loud, using just a few sentences to tell the story with “I” statements. A brief, well-rehearsed testimony will make a powerful impact on your listener.

3. Have realistic expectations.

Remember that you are responsible to share when the Holy Spirit stirs you to do so. But you are not responsible for what the hearer does with your testimony. Some will respond with gladness, and others with silence. A few may become irritated or even critical. Let God work on them. You don’t have to engage in a debate. Simply state your story and trust God to handle the details.

4. Continue to pray afterward.

When God gives you the chance to share your testimony, don’t forget to pray for those who heard it. Pray that your testimony would point the hearer to God. Ask God to light a fire in their hearts, even if it’s from a tiny spark of interest. Pray that they will have a hunger and thirst to know more, and that God will surround them with more truth. If you know you will see the person again, you can pray for more opportunities to share. If the person is a stranger, pray that God will send more Christians to speak God’s truth to that person.

4 Tips for Sharing Your Testimony

I hope these tips will inspire you to share your faith over the upcoming holiday season. Many people still need to hear the basic gospel truths that God loves them, Jesus died for their sins, and they can have eternal life if they believe. They are more likely to internalize those truths when they see how God is at work in everyday people’s lives, like yours. So don’t be afraid to tell how God has redeemed you. He may use your story to lead many people to believe.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for everything you have redeemed in my life.
I know that you want me to share my testimony so that others may believe.
Help me identify which stories you want me to share so others will see your glory, Lord.
I pray for courage and wisdom in sharing my testimony within your perfect timing.
Holy Spirit, help me know when and what you want me to share.
I trust that you will guide me.
Help me to recognize the people you place on my path who need to hear.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Lord, help me identify which stories you want me to share so others will see your glory. #prayer #testimony Click To Tweet
